Kika’s Story
** KIKA'S ADOPTION FEE IS SPONSORED **
Kika / Female / Approximately 3 years old / 60 lbs / Terrier Mix / No Dogs / No Children / No Cats / Would Do Best with Experienced Owner / Female Only Home / From Mexico / Fostered in Toronto
Meet Kika! Kika is a loving, devoted, and very smart girl. She adores affection and attention, and will pull the silliest faces trying to get her people to laugh. Kika came to us after she wandered into the home of a shelter volunteer badly injured and clearly the subject of mistreatment. She was in terrible shape but knew how to find a safe place and trustworthy people.
Since coming into foster care in Ontario, Kika has lived in a few different homes while we've gotten to know her. She now lives with an experienced foster who understands her quirks and is thriving with steady guidance and leadership. Kika is a wonderful companion. She loves playing with her toys and going out on her walks. She can entertain herself when her foster is working and doesn't mind winding down in her crate for a nap.
Kika is a confident, brave, and very clever. She learned to trust her foster very quickly and trusts that she won't let anyone too close. Kika is super intuitive and loves pleasing her human. She loves when her human laughs or shows joy. Kika loves smiling and attracts lots of attention when out on walks. She will make the cutest little noises when she wants her human's attention, and loves playing footsie with her human. She loves going out for walks but prefers early morning or evening when it is a bit quieter. Kika loves meeting other dogs while out on walks, especially little or playful dogs.
Kika is very wary of men and cannot relax when they are in her space. She can pass them on the street or outdoors but doesn't want them in the house with her. Kika will bark and growl if a man is in her space and wants to guard herself and her human, but has been fine crated in another room when men are in the house. Kika is an amazing dog in a female-only household where she can properly relax.
Kika has resource guarding around her food which needs to be taken seriously and addressed appropriately. Her current foster
feeds her separately and does not bother her or interact with her while she is eating. Kika is also not currently trained using food but rather is given positive reinforcement (verbal, scratches, pets) when she does well.
Kika is great in the house and will stay in her crate for up to five hours while her foster goes out. She will usually just sleep. She is fine when her foster is in another room and will usually just amuse herself with a toy. Kika sleeps through the night in her crate without issue. She is fully potty trained and will pee outside on command.
Kika's ideal home would be with a single female in a low traffic household who does not intend to ever live with a man. Kika bonds very deeply to one person but could live with more than one female. Ideally, Kika's adopters will have dog experience (resource guarding experience would be amazing), or be very open to learning. Once Kika learns to trust her new human, she is actually a very easy dog. Kika could live in a house, townhouse, or apartment outside a busy downtown core. If an apartment or condo, her adopter will have to be very diligent about not having her in elevators with other people. Kika is looking for a home without children, cats, or other dogs. Although she loves meeting other dogs while out on her walks, her resource guarding makes her unable to live with other dogs without an extremely experienced human.
Kika is a wonderful, special lady, who is trying really hard to overcome her past trauma. She has a huge amount of love to give and would make an amazing companion in the right household. Kika's foster has generously offered to speak with any interested adopters and provide more details on how to set Kika up for success.
